Temporary Full-Time (1.0) Resource Room Teacher
 
Fort St. John is located in beautiful Northern British Columbia, 478 km northeast of Prince George and 1,237 km north of Vancouver. Fort St. John is situated near the border with neighbouring Alberta, 214 km west of Grande Prairie, Alberta.

 

A temporary full-time (1.0) Resource Room Teacher is required by School District No. 60 (Peace River North). The assignment will be at C.M. Finch Elementary School effective September 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. The successful applicant must have the ability and formal training to work with students with cognitive, physical or sensory difficulties and multiple challenges. The successful candidate will work with students in Kindergarten through grade six.

 

Qualifications and Attributes

 

The ideal candidate will have:
 Masters degree in Special Education (or working towards)
 strong commitment to fostering student independence
 advocacy for and empathy with students with special needs and their families
 ability to work collaboratively with classroom teachers at a variety of levels, and a commitment to inclusive education
 ability to work collaboratively with district support staff and provincial specialists and outreach teams
 ability to carry out a variety of assessments including classroom observation, administration and interpretation of norm-referenced assessment instruments, curriculum-based assessment, diagnostic teaching methods, and functional analysis of behaviour
 Facilitating IEP/SBT meetings
 ability to develop and implement extensive Individual Education Plans
 ability to provide directions to a number of educational assistants and plan and schedule appropriately for the most educationally efficient use of their services and skills
 ability to provide support and resources to classroom teachers
 flexible schedule to chair meetings outside of regular school hours
 excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
 ability to help children use adaptive technology to support learning
 ability to contribute to development, implementation and evaluation of IEP's (detailing adaptations and modifications) in consultation with classroom teachers, parents, students and district resource personnel
 commitment to working with colleagues on staff development activities linked to the School Improvement Plan
 ability to create complex visual schedules and support systems
 experience with practices appropriate for low incidence students with special needs including functional curriculum, functional analysis of behavior, community based programs, discrete trial format training, pictorial communication systems, MAPS and PATHS
 POPARD training or University level course work on developing educational programs for students with Autism and related disorders or a willingness to enrol in POPARD ASD course online/or offer by District
 knowledge and experience in personal care such as tube feeds
 experience working with children with Autism
 Preference will be given to the candidate with:
 understanding of or experience with sensory integration programs
 basic skills in sign language (ASL), Prolog2go, Touch Chat, Chat Silk
 thorough understanding and experience with communication systems such as PECS, switches, switch activated devices, voice output systems
 this position entails physical support to children including CPI, lifting and transferring students to mobility devices
 resourceful with ministry website: POPFASD, Set BC, POPARD
 proficient with MacIntosh computers - i.e. word, Power Point, Keynote, IMovie, DVD
 proficient with assistive technology to support student learning: i.e. Clicker 5, Advanced Boardmaker, Voice to text software, Co-Writer, Soundfield/FM systems, Text to speech software, Kurzweil
 knowledge of RTI and UDL strategies
 valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate (or eligible for)
