Dr. Shelly Niemi
A Hiker's Guide to Cultural Safety
A Hiker's Guide to Cultural Safety
This session will feature a conversation about creating culturally safe spaces in public education. It begins at the individual level and starts with a map, a goal, and a commitment to training. Cultural Safety is an outcome. It requires new pathways in thinking that challenge our understanding of history, standards, norms and privileges. Dr. Niemi will present a case of indigenizing practice and a framework for engagement. In the words of Senator Murray Sinclair, "We have described for you a mountain. We have shown you the path to the top. We call upon you to do the climbing."
Dr. Shelly Niemi is Nehiyaw-Metis Iskwew, and currently holds the role of District Administrator of Indigenous Education with the Greater Victoria (SD #61).
