Alternative Literacy for Alternative Communication? Literacy Skills, ASD, and AAC
Alternative Literacy for Alternative Communication? Literacy Skills, ASD, and AAC
Literacy skills are required for a significant amount of educational participation, and integration of a student’s AAC with literacy instruction is an important part of a student’s meaningful inclusion. In this workshop, participants will receive an overview of how literacy instruction can be achieved or supported with different AACs and see examples of some in use.

Myra is a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst and holds a doctoral degree in Special Education. She has worked with students with autism and related learning differences for over 20 years, and believes that student behaviour is never ‘right’ or ‘wrong’: it just tells us what we need to change in order to teach them more of the skills that will really benefit them.

Doug has grown up in various parts of BC which has given him an appreciation and understanding of the rich diversity across the province. His teaching career started in Port McNeill as a learning services teacher and Vice Principal, to Port Hardy, and finally to SET-BC where his passion for using technology to reduce barriers to education drives him to ensure each student is as fully integrated into the school community as possible.
