Framing Autism: Shifting Views, Changing Outcomes
Framing Autism: Shifting Views, Changing Outcomes
This presentation examines how evolving perspectives on autism impact outcomes for individuals and communities. By analyzing the shifts in cultural, medical, and educational views, it highlights how changing perceptions can lead to more inclusive practices, improved support systems, and greater understanding. The goal is to inspire a rethinking of how autism is framed in society.
Dr. Michelle Schmidt, Executive Director, Autism Community Training has more than 35 years experience in inclusive education. Michelle served as Director of Instruction in Surrey, with initiatives featured in the Spring 2022 and Spring 2021 issues of InspirEd. When Michelle left the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows School District an award was created in her name and in 2017 the Canadian Association of Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing presented Michelle with the Advocacy Award. Michelle has served on provincial and national initiatives, presented internationally, developed university and college curriculum, and served as an expert consultant.
