Exploring Autistic Experience in Schools:
Understanding Barriers to School from an Autistic Perspective and the Neurodiversity Paradigm
During this session, we will delve into the challenges Autistic individuals face accessing school. We will being by introducing several models of disability, ableism, and the neurodiversity paradigm. Following this, we will examine four main frames identified in Nat's research and personal experience regarding what contributes to the (in)accessibility of schools for Autistic, neurodivergent, and disabled individuals. The subsequent afternoon session will focus on addressing these barriers with actionable solutions.
Nat Raedwulf Pogue is an Autistic, multiply-disabled, award-winning learning support teacher and novice researcher whose work centers on how to create neuro-affirming, accessible spaces for Autistic, neurodivergent and disabled people in school. She holds a Masters in Special Education and is a community partner for the Autism, Neurodiversity and Academic Achievement Lab through the University of Alberta.
