Supporting Pathological Demand Avoidance in the Classroom
Supporting Pathological Demand Avoidance in the Classroom
In this workshop we will be looking at PDA: what is PDA; what’s the connection to autism; and how do we support these students. PDAers themselves describe their experience as a Pervasive Drive for Autonomy (PDA) - the need for autonomy. PDAers and the school system can be at odds, as there are necessary demands in a classroom. How do we support students in managing the classroom experience? We will be exploring this together in an interactive workshop.
Sam McCorriston is a co-owner and counsellor at AsUR (pronounced As You Are) Counselling and Consulting, specializing in neurodivergent affirming supports. Sam has a particular interest in PDA, advocacy supports, and late diagnosis - working in individual counselling, groups, workshops, and advocacy partnership. Sam focuses on choice and agency as foundational to safety and change. She is excited to collaborate with those looking to include neurodivergence perspectives and inclusion in their own work!
